What is Four Cross?
4 cross involves four riders competing on a specially designed course lasting between 25 seconds and 1 minute. Courses can be a mixture of natural and man-made obstacles covering various levels of descent. Obstacles can include rhythm sections, table tops, ski jumps, drop-offs, berm corners and double/triple jumps.
The top UK riders include Steve Peat, Will Longden, Scott Beaumont, Gee Atherton, Dan Atherton, Steve Taylor, Martin Ogden and Dale Holmes, with former world BMX champions Dale Holmes and Scott Beaumont, and world Downhill champion Steve Peat now the top riders in the world’s 4X elite.
The competition starts with riders competing against each other by a series of heats called ‘motos’ with riders competing in three motos before moving on to quarter finals, semi finals and then the final. The riders compete in knockout stages until there are only 4 riders left.
All the events are spread across the Uk so there should be one you, you want to come and race or come along and watch as it said in MBUK just turn up and ride its that simple.
The dates and all the information for the races are on the links above so go explore and we will see you track side.
What is the format of 4X racing?
New this year FOUR Moto format will be in place at all events. All events that have Quarter & Semi-finals will also have a B Final and A final. So positions 1 through to 8 will be decided on a final race.
Here’s the proposed format
A minimum of 4 riders will make a race. If there are less than 4, then the riders will be mixed with the nearest appropriate ability/age class. If there are only 4 riders in a class, the results will be decided over 5 Motos. Equal points over 5 Motos will mean that the 5th Moto will have greater weight. If there are limited female riders, they will be moved into the next boys age category down to race but will still score Series Points for there age.
- 5-12 riders will go straight into a 4 person final after 4 Motos.
- 13-24 riders will have semi-finals. This means that there will be a B final and A final.
- 25+ riders will have quarterfinals, semi-finals, then into B & A finals.
Start Gate
Every race starts from the purpose built gate, the uses a air ram to shoot the front of the gate down into the floor.
The start using a Random drop same as the World Cup 4X races, so can drop anywhere between 2 and 6 seconds so no one can jump the get and get a head start.
If you have never used the gate before – We have 1 hour practice session at every race so you can practice on the gate.
Also look out for dates of Gate Practice days we will be doing over the summer or check out Chicksands who are also running some gate practice days.
Example of the gate in action, well sort of….
